What is Form 8822?

IRS: About Form 8822

Who should use it?

Use it when a home mailing address changes for the returns listed on the form. Check every affected return category. If the change also affects a child who filed an income tax return, file a separate Form 8822 for that child.

When is another process needed?

Use Form 8822-B for a business address change. A person without authority cannot request someone else’s address change. This form does not update every government agency, redirect postal mail or amend a tax return.

Prepare Form 8822 with Faye

Faye asks which returns are affected, whose address changes, whether the last return was joint, and for the old and new addresses. It asks for spouse, prior-name, foreign-address, decedent or representative details only when relevant.

Confirmed answers fill the official fields as you go. You can correct, undo or skip answers, including sensitive identifiers, and finish manually. Chat supports English, Spanish and Chinese; the original remains English and names, addresses and identifiers are not rewritten.

Field guidance

Lines 1–2: affected returns

These choices can both apply. The separate-residence box requires a last joint return and a new residence apart from that spouse.

Lines 3–5: taxpayer, spouse and prior names

Copy names and identifiers accurately. Enter prior names only if changed and notify the Social Security Administration of a name change as instructed.

Line 6a: old home address

Use the previous address, including apartment, city, state and ZIP. It determines the mailing destination when line 2 does not apply, subject to the table’s special cases.

Line 6b: spouse’s old address

Complete this only if the applicable spouse’s old address differs from line 6a. Each spouse establishing a separate residence must notify their own address change.

Line 7: new home address

Provide the complete new mailing address. For a foreign address, do not abbreviate the country and follow its postal-code conventions. Use C/O with the supplied third-party name and address when appropriate.

Part II: contact and representative

Daytime telephone is optional. Enter a representative’s title only if applicable; it does not replace the signature or required power-of-attorney attachment.

Information to prepare

Have your taxpayer name and SSN, complete old and new mailing addresses, apartment or suite numbers, and the type of affected return available. Prior names and spouse details are needed only when applicable.

For Forms 706 or 706-NA, prepare the decedent’s name and SSN. A representative signing for the taxpayer must attach a copy of the power of attorney; Form 2848 may be used. No identity-document upload is required here.

Who signs Form 8822?

The taxpayer, executor, donor or authorized representative must sign. If the last return was joint, the spouse also signs unless the separate-residence box on line 1 applies.

Signature and date lines are not editable PDF fields. Download and complete the required signatures and dates before mailing. A typed name or representative title is not a signature. A representative must attach a copy of the power of attorney; the editor does not create authority, notarize or supply a certified electronic signature.

Where to send the completed form

Do not attach Form 8822 to your tax return. If line 2 is checked for gift, estate or generation-skipping transfer returns, the instructions direct it to Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center, Kansas City, MO 64999-0023.

Otherwise use the page 2 “Where To File” table for your old home mailing address, including its foreign-address and territory exceptions. Do not choose from your new address or use the address for comments. Check the current official instructions before mailing. The IRS generally takes 4–6 weeks to process a change; this is not a guaranteed deadline. Fylune does not submit or change IRS records.

Common address-change mistakes

Using Form 8822 for a business, omitting apartment numbers, or selecting the mailing destination from the new address.

Omitting a required spouse signature, treating separate residences as one new joint address, or entering decedent information for an ordinary gift return.

Abbreviating a foreign country, using a P.O. box in place of a street address when street delivery is available, or attaching the form to a tax return.

8822 questions

Can I change a business address with Form 8822?

No. Use Form 8822-B for a business address change.

Do both spouses need to sign?

If the last return was joint, both generally sign unless the line 1 separate-residence exception applies. Spouses establishing separate residences should each notify their own new address.

Which address determines where I mail it?

If line 2 is checked, follow its Kansas City destination. Otherwise use the old-home-address table and its special cases on page 2, not the new address.

Is changing my postal address enough?

The IRS recommends notifying it directly even when notifying the post office. Mail forwarding does not guarantee every government payment or notice will reach you.

Does downloading this PDF update IRS records?

No. Review, sign and send it as instructed. The IRS generally takes 4–6 weeks to process an address change.

How are my answers stored, and is AI free?

Web documents are saved to your cloud account, including a temporary guest account, and are not end-to-end encrypted. AI assistance uses available account credits and sends your messages, current form fields and selected resources to the AI provider. Manual filling and watermarked downloads are free; watermark-free downloads require the applicable purchase or Premium access. To keep a tax ID out of AI requests, finish the AI conversation before entering it manually and do not send another AI message afterward.
